Rachael Thoms & Luke Sweeting Duo

This exciting collaboration between two fresh minded and dynamic musicians is proving to be a unique addition to the Australian contemporary jazz music scene.

Thoms and Sweeting have been performing together for the past three years, and have recently released an album together entitled "The Great Unknown".  The 10 track debut was recorded at James Morrison Studios in Sydney during January 2011 and is largely a showcase for the original works of the duo. The album collaboration between Thoms and Sweeting, who are both ANU School of Music graduates, came to fruition at the end of 2010 after countless gigs and jam sessions.  In Thoms' words;  "The duo sound just crystallized."

The pair realised that this format allowed them a freedom and creativity that truly played to their individual strengths. With Thoms’ classical training, control and range, and Sweeting’s solo piano and improvisational skills, and ability to orchestrate spontaneously they discovered their niche.

“The amazing part of making music with Rachael is her incredible control of sound. When she sings those notes she just nails them so beautifully that you can’t help being drawn in... Rachael has one of the most versatile voices you could ever compose for...” says Luke.

“Working with Luke motivates me to be the best musician I can be. When you hear him play you get this sense that his waters run deep... His creative instinct, sensitivity, and technical mastery constantly amaze me...” says Rachael.

The original compositions on the album draw on the diverse skills of the duo, fusing classical capabilities with contemporary jazz harmony and improvisation. Thoms and Sweeting aimed to capture a truly live and authentic vibe in the studio. “The Great Unknown” includes wordless vocalise, messages of maternal love, loneliness, apprehension, and hope, along with creative use of percussion and prepared piano.
